Majordomo Subscriber's Guide

A mailing list is a group of electronic mail addresses that can all be reached by sending mail to a single address, the mailing list address. For example, when you send mail to my_list_name@listlink.berkeley.edu, everyone who belongs to the mailing list will receive your message. Maintaining a mailing list can be tedious when one person, the mailing list owner, has to manually edit a file to add new subscribers or to remove old subscribers.

Majordomo is an easy-to-use software tool that automates the management of mailing lists. You can join, ``subscribe to'', or cancel your participation, ``unsubscribe from'', a mailing list by using Majordomo commands and electronic mail. Majordomo also sends out the on-going mail addressed to the mailing list and can also provide basic information about a mailing list.

(NOTE: If you use MS Outlook to send mail see the Instructions for MS Outlook .)

To use Majordomo, just send mail, addressed to:

majordomo@ccc.at
The body of your mail message should contain Majordomo commands. Make sure that the Majordomo commands are in the body of the mail message and not the ``Subject:'' field, since anything in the ``Subject:'' field is ignored.

You can subscribe to a Majodomo mailing list by sending mail to majordomo@ccc.atthat contains this single line, in the body of the message:

subscribe list_name
where list_name is the name of the Majordomo mailing list that you wish to join.

You can unsubscribe from a Majodomo mailing list by sending mail to majordomo@ccc.atthat contains this single line:

unsubscribe list_name
where list_name is the name of the Majordomo mailing list from which you wish to stop receiving mail.

You can send mail to all the members of the mailing list, by addressing your mail to the list:

list_name@ccc.at
where list_name is the name of the Majordomo mailing list.

For more details on other Majordomo commands, send mail to majordomo@ccc.atthat contains this single line:

help
If you want to privately contact the owner of the mailing list, rather than the entire mailing list, send mail addressed to owner-list_name@ccc.at(replacing list_name with the actual name of the mailing list).

Majordomo User Command Summary

Here is a list of majordomo commands for mailing list subscribers. To use Majordomo, send a mail message addressed to majordomo@ccc.atthat contains one or more of the following commands. Make sure to replace ``list_name'' with the actual name of the Majordomo mailing list, and replace your_email_address with your own e-mail address. If your account is on UCLink, then you only need to specify your login name, i.e., john; you do not need to use your full email address, i.e., john@uclink.berkeley.edu. If your email account is not on UCLink, then you need to include your full e-mail address, i.e., joan@garnet.berkeley.edu.

Instructions for MS Outlook

We have discovered a problem with Outlook Express and Majordomo. Outlook Express puts extraneous characters in the headers of a message, these characters confuse Majordomo. To fix this, on the Outlook Express Tool Bar, go to "Tools" then "Options" then "Sending Mail". You should have the setting "Plain Text" selected. Additional settings should have MIME encoding highlighted with the line: "Encode text using: NONE"

If this does not work, please send a message to the owner and ask them to subscribe or unsubscribe you. Write to:

listname-owner@ccc.at
where listname is the name of the list you are trying to subscribe or unsubscribe.

You can also change your word wrapping from the default 76 to the highest number 123. I hope these settings will allow you to successfully communicate with majordomo. Otherwise, you may need to use another email client (ie Eudora) to send messages to majordomo.
