September 97/13:50) - Paris, 8 September 1997 -- Telstra has awarded a 130 million FRF contract to Alcatel for the expansion of its network for DialConnectÒ and Big Pond HomeÒ services to provide remote, dial-up access to corporate data networks or Intranets, information-based value added services and the Internet. The three-year contract covers the supply and installation of access multiplexers, network management solutions and Australian-based support services and training. Alcatel’s network management system is capable of supporting very large Dial IP networks. The carrier-class equipment will enhance the quality of Telstra’s home and corporate services and also increase the capacity and national coverage to provide service to up to two million subscribers. DialConnectÒ supports remote access dial-up to local area and wide area networks as well as on-line data applications with access via the standard telephone line or an ISDN line at speeds of up to 28.8kbit/s or 64kbit/s respectively. Subscribers must provide a user name and password to gain access and once access is authorised, the service establishes a virtual path between the subscriber and service provider, along which all data is sent and received. Big Pond HomeÒ provides remote (dial up) access to casual and home-based small business users who have no need for regular access to Internet and on-line data applications. The market for the Telstra DialConnectÒ product includes on-line information providers who can provide access to stock exchange information, financial market and weather reports; banks and financial institutions for on-line banking applications such as account payment, loan and credit card applications and large corporate organisations for efficient information sharing, telecommuting, multimedia applications and electronic mail. This contract reinforces Alcatel’s position in Australia where it has played a major role in the development of Australian telecommunications for more than 100 years. As Australia’s leading telecommunications exporter for the last three years, the company draws on its local expertise in switching, access solutions, telephones and submarine cable systems to service both the domestic and export markets. More than 2000 people are employed across Australia and $70 million will be spent in R&D this year. Alcatel’s commitment to Australian industry is significant with more than $360m invested over the last ten years in new facilities and training of staff. It has strategic alliances with many suppliers and subcontractors, investing some $160 million annually with local suppliers. DialConnectÒ and Big PondÒ are trademarks of Telstra Corporation Ltd.
