Clean up and Protect the Registry of Windows95 Super Win Software introduces a program that prevents hours of down time and improves the performance of Windows95. Their newest release of WinRescue 95 provides five fold protection from a Windows95 crash and removes errors from the registry by regularly compacting the registry. Unlike other programs, WinRescue 95 does not have to run in the background to accomplish this. "WinRescue does slick backups of Windows 95 registry and other important files" explains a WinRescue user, Robert Johns. "What is new is that it also does a great job of compacting the registry. Before compacting my system.dat file was 3.9 meg afterwards 2.7." The nature of the Windows95 registry makes the Compact feature of WinRescue 95 necessary to prevent crashes and errors. Without the occasional care that WinRescue 95 can do automatically, the registry will become a fat, clumpsy, memory consuming glutton. The registry is ever growing because once information is entered into the registry the only way to remove it is by compacting the registry. Many programs now put all of their initiation information in the registry instead of in separate *.ini files. If a user properly uninstalls a program this initiation information is not removed but converted to data rubbish. It does not appear in the Registry Editor but it is still there and so the registry does not get smaller. In time it becomes bloated with this data rubbish taking up precious hard drive space and causing errors. Compacting the registry cleans out the data rubbish and puts things in order. Errors are removed and thus an unwanted crash may be prevented. The registry ends up smaller and more efficient. If a crash occurs, WinRescue 95 can restore everything in minutes. The user may choose from five restore options which restore from either the last successful registry, a spare registry, a backed up configuration, a backup on diskette, or the original registry. If the novice user cannot discern which of these restore options to use, the Restore Wizard will figure out which one to start with. If that restore option doesn't work, the Wizard will restore the next recent option, and so on. "I'm always playing with new programs," explains Ray Parker, "so I backup my registry every day. WinRescue 95 has saved me many times." For those whose harddrives have vast expanses of unused space, WinRescue 95 can make an unlimited number of backups. For the less fortunate user backups may be limited to three or ten always keeping the oldest and newest backups. Each set of backup files is placed in its own subdirectory of WinRescue 95.
